World Dog Surfing Championships Are Coming to Pacifica: What Bay Area Dog Lovers Should Know

There are dog-friendly events, and then there are only-in-the-Bay-Area dog-friendly events.

This summer, one of the region’s most joyful and delightfully specific traditions returns to the coast: the World Dog Surfing Championships in Pacifica.

Held at Linda Mar Beach, also known as Pacifica State Beach, the event brings together dogs, humans, surfboards, spectators, rescue groups, wellness vendors, and a whole lot of coastal energy for a celebration of dogs doing something most humans still find intimidating: catching waves.

For Bay Area dog lovers, it is one of those events that feels equal parts sport, spectacle, community gathering, and reminder that life with dogs is better when it includes a little adventure.

What Is the World Dog Surfing Championships?

The World Dog Surfing Championships is an annual competition where dogs ride waves on surfboards, either solo, with other dogs, or alongside their humans.

The 2026 live in-person championship is scheduled for Saturday, August 1, from 9am to 2pm at Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica. Local coverage also notes that the 10-year anniversary celebration includes free events on July 31 and August 1.

Event Schedule:

The official August 1 schedule includes:

Surf dog entrant check-in from 9am to 10am

Dog surfing exhibitions and heats from 9:20am to 1:30pm

Awards and prizes from 1:30pm to 2pm

A Pet Wellness Fair from 9am to 2pm

Surf Dog Village from 9am to 2pm

Mobile pet adoptions through Rocket Dog Rescue and Peninsula Humane Society

Additional sports competitions to be announced

Competition categories include small, medium, large and extra-large surf dogs, stand-up paddle dog categories, tandem dog heats, tandem human/dog heats, top dog awards, and even a dog beach fashion competition.

A Little History: How Dog Surfing Became a Thing

Dog surfing may sound like a novelty, but it has a real history.

According to the event organizers, the broader Surf Dog Competitions sponsored by TasteTV began with the “Small Wave Surf Dog Competition” in 2006. The original concept was tied to the author of “The Dog’s Guide to Surfing,” and the first competition was held at the Loews Coronado hotel in San Diego.

From there, the idea grew into similar dog surfing events across California and beyond, including competitions in Florida, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

Pacifica has become one of the sport’s signature homes. The World Dog Surfing Championships are based in the San Francisco Bay Area and take place on the Northern California coast, where the local event has grown into a beloved annual tradition.

For 2026, the Pacifica event is being celebrated as its 10-year anniversary, which makes this year feel especially worth watching.

Can Any Dog Sign Up?

Dog preparing to surf

Sort of, but this is not a casual “show up and paddle out” situation.

According to the official registration page, dog entrants can register for the live in-person surfing competition. The listed fee is $50 per dog entrant per heat category, including dog size-based heats and tandem heats. Dogs can enter one size or weight-based category, and humans without dogs cannot enter the surfing competition.

The organizers also note that acceptance into the live in-person dog surfing competition is at their discretion.

There are other ways to participate, too. The Ball-and-Fetch-Water competition has a listed entrant fee, while the fashion contest is listed as free, with donations encouraged for charity.

So yes, dog participation appears to be open to entrants, but it is structured, organized, and subject to approval. If you have a dog who loves water and already has surf experience, this may be something to explore. If your dog has never been on a board, this is probably better enjoyed as a spectator event.

What Happens at the Event?

The main attraction is, of course, the surfing.

Dogs compete in heats based on size and format. In past coverage, dogs have surfed solo, in tandem with other dogs, and even alongside their humans. Judges look at things like balance, endurance, time on the board, and tricks performed during the ride.

But the event is also about more than competition.

The 2026 schedule includes a Pet Wellness Fair, where attendees can find checkups and wellness-related activities such as nails, teeth, weight, tips, vet questions, massage, fitness, and medical resources. There is also a Surf Dog Village, mobile pet adoptions, and additional activities connected to the broader celebration.

For spectators, it is the kind of event where the crowd is part of the energy. Past championships have drawn thousands of people to the beach to watch dogs in life vests ride Pacific waves.

Why It Feels So Bay Area

There is something wonderfully local about the whole thing.

Pacifica is already one of the Bay Area’s most iconic coastal dog destinations. Add surfboards, rescue groups, wellness booths, and a community of people cheering for dogs doing their best, and you get an event that captures a lot of what makes Bay Area dog culture special.

It is active. It is outdoors. It is a little quirky. It is deeply affectionate. And at its heart, it is about the relationship between dogs and their humans.

The best part may not even be the tricks or trophies. It is watching a dog and their person do something together that requires trust, patience, practice, and joy.

That is the part we love most.

A Few Tips If You Go

If you plan to attend with your dog, keep in mind that beach events can be exciting, crowded, loud, and overstimulating.

A few smart things to consider:

  • Arrive early

  • Bring fresh water and a portable bowl.

  • Keep your dog on leash unless you are in an approved off-leash area.

  • Watch your dog’s stress signals.

  • Be careful around other dogs, surfboards, and crowds.

  • Pack layers. Pacifica can be chilly and foggy even in summer.

  • Respect event staff, beach rules, and competitor areas.

  • And if your dog is not comfortable around crowds, water, or lots of other dogs, it is completely okay to leave them at home and go enjoy the spectacle yourself.

The Brindleden Take

Whale and her human

At Brindleden, we love events like this because they show just how expansive life with dogs can be.

Dogs are not just pets waiting at home. They are companions, teammates, social catalysts, and sometimes, apparently, surfers.

The World Dog Surfing Championships are playful and a little over-the-top, but they also point to something bigger: people want more ways to share their lives with their dogs.

That is the spirit we are building around at Brindleden. More community. More shared experiences. More places where dogs and humans can live their lives together.

Brindleden is opening in the South Bay / Silicon Valley, with our exact location to be announced soon.

If this kind of dog-centered community resonates with you, we would love for you to stay connected.

Visit our homepage to learn more, receive updates on our opening and events, and be among the first to know when membership becomes available.

And if this vision speaks to you, we would truly appreciate your help in building it. Share Brindleden with friends, neighbors, and fellow dog lovers who believe dogs and people deserve something more, because community is something we create together.

We cannot wait to welcome you and your dog.
